According to the report of news agency PTI, officials said that the matter came to light on Saturday when the Static Surveillance Team (SST) of Chamarajpet stopped a car carrying cash worth Rs 2 crore at around 4 pm and informed the Income Tax Department officials. The election office said that an FIR has been registered at Cottonpet police station against BJP state office secretary Lokesh Ambekallu, Venkatesh Prasad and Gangadhar for carrying Rs 2 crore in cash. For this, permission has also been taken from the court on Sunday.

The cash was legitimate, yet why was an FIR registered?

According to Election Commission officials, the Income Tax Department summoned BJP officials and the investigation found that there was no violation under Income Tax laws as the source of funds was legitimate.

However, as per the instructions of the Election Commission, cash amount of more than Rs 10,000 given to party officials and agents of candidates for political activities will be given through check or online mode. The Election Commission had also advised political parties not to carry large amounts of cash. Therefore FIR has been registered.

Officials said that the Election Commission’s instructions were violated in the matter. Based on suspicion that the money could be used for election inducement, an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he said.
