Lok Sabha Speaker Election: Om Birla has been elected as the new speaker of Lok Sabha. The PM had proposed the name of Om Birla for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker in the House. Which was supported by Lallan Singh and Rajnath Singh. After this, Om Birla was elected Speaker by voice vote. At the same time, Kodikunnil Suresh was made the candidate for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker from the opposition.
This was the first such occasion after 1976. Let us tell you that in independent India, elections for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker were held only three times in 1952, 1967 and 1976.
Why did the election come to an end
There was no consensus between the government and the opposition parties regarding the selection of the Lok Sabha speaker. Due to which the need for elections had arisen. This was the first show of strength between the government and the opposition after the formation of the NDA government for the third consecutive time.
Why there was no vote division
Voice vote was used for the election of Lok Sabha Speaker. After which questions were raised as to why there was no division of votes. Actually, the opposition itself had not raised any demand for division of votes. For this reason, Om Birla was elected as the new Speaker by voice vote. After this, the proposal presented regarding Suresh became inactive.
PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi had seated themselves
After Om Birla was elected Speaker of Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi took him to his seat. It has been a tradition that the Leader of the House and the Leader of Opposition take the MP elected for the post of Speaker of Lok Sabha from his seat to the Speaker’s chair. During this, Prime Minister Modi and Rahul Gandhi also shook hands.
