Lord Shiva: Jyotirlinga has been considered to have special importance in Hinduism. This is one of the revered places of Lord Shiva. The literal meaning of Jyotirlinga is ‘linga of light’, which represents the divine light of Lord Shiva. There are 12 major Jyotirlingas in India which are related to Mahakal Shiva. It is said that by having darshan of 12 Jyotirlingas, all kinds of sufferings of the devotees go away.

1. Somnath Jyotirling
Somnath Temple is a very important temple for Hindus. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is located in Veraval port of Saurashtra region of Gujarat. It is said about this temple that it was built by Chandra Dev himself.
2. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga
Sri Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is situated on the Srisailam mountain on the banks of Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh. This Jyotirlinga is called Kailash of the South. The glory of this Jyotirlinga has been described in the Hindu scriptures. This is a very old temple which is situated in the middle of a high stone wall.
3. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on the banks of Kshipra river in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Kumbh Mela is also organized here. Among the 12 Jyotirlingas, Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga has a special significance. It is said about Mahakal that it is the only valid Shivling on earth.
4. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Omkareshwar or Omkareshwar temple is located in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. It is believed that in this temple Kubera, the supreme devotee of Shiva, had done penance and established the Shivling. Out of all the 12 Jyotirlingas, this is the only Jyotirlinga where Lord Shiva comes to sleep.
5. Kedarnath Jyotirling
Kedarnath Temple is situated in the lap of Himalayas in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state. The doors of Kedarnath temple open in the month of April and the doors of the temple are closed in the month of November. Along with religious belief, this temple is amazing in itself.
6. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga
Bhimashankar comes at the sixth place among the 12 major Jyotirlingas. This Jyotirlinga is also known as Moteshwar Mahadev. A person gets rid of all the sorrows just by seeing this Jyotirlinga. The Bhima river also originates from here.
7. Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga
Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the important temples among all the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. This temple is situated in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. It is also known as Vishweshwar Jyotirlinga. Kashi Vishwanath is an important center of Hindu faith.
8. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga
Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is a major pilgrimage center for Hindus. This temple is completely dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in Trimbak village of Maharashtra. Out of 12 Jyotirlingas, Trimbakeshwar is considered as the eighth Jyotirlinga. This temple is near the holy Godavari river.
9. Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga
The holy Vaidyanath Shivling, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, is located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. People also know this place by the name of Baba Baijnath Dham. It is said that Bholenath fulfills the wishes of all the devotees who come here. That’s why this Shivling is also called ‘Kamna Linga’.
10. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is located in Dwarka, Gujarat. In the month of Sawan, there is a special significance of worshiping the Shivlings installed in this ancient Nageshwar Shiva temple together. Devotees come from far and wide to visit and worship these wonderful Shivlings in the temple. There is a huge crowd here on Mondays of Sawan.
11. Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga
Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga located in Ramanathapuram of Tamil Nadu has a special place. The Shivling established here is considered one of the twelve Dwadash Jyotirlingas. The importance of Kashi in the north is equal to that of Rameshwaram in the south. It is one of the four dhams of Sanatan Dharma. It is believed that by offering Ganges water on Jyotirling here one attains salvation.
12. Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga
There is Ghushmeshwar Jyotirlinga in a village called Verul in Maharashtra. This Jyotirlinga is considered to be the last of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. According to Puranas, by visiting Ghushmeshwar Mahadev, man gets all the happiness of life. This Jyotirlinga is also known as Ghrishneshwar.
