Shaukat Azmi told in her autobiography that Shabana Azmi tried to commit suicide twice. The actress felt that her mother loved her younger brother Baba Azmi more. Due to this, Shabana once consumed copper sulphate in the school lab and her friend saved her life. Once, after being scolded by her mother, Shabana even tried to commit suicide by coming in front of a train but the school watchman saved her.

Received National Award five times
Shabana Azmi made her debut in 1974 with Shyam Benegal’s film ‘Ankur’. In this film, Shabana played the role of a servant and for this role she received the National Award in the Best Actress category. After this, the actress received the National Award for Best Actress for three consecutive years for ‘Earth’, ‘Khandhar’ and ‘Paar’. Shabana also won the National Award for the 1999 film ‘Godmother’. Apart from this, the actress was also awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
