Mahaan Review: Tamil film director Karthik Subbaraj’s previous film ‘Jageme Thandiram’ had a major problem, the detail. It seemed that it has been written thinking of a web series. Now watching his recent film ‘Mahan’ on Amazon Prime Video, it seems that Karthik has creativity but it is only imprisoned in his mind, it cannot appear on the screen. A film was conceived about the famous hero Vikram of Tamil films and his son Dhruv Vikram, in which the father is a gangster and the son is a policeman, what could be a better plot than this, but as usual this time also the story on which web series should be made By making a film on it, Karthik did not do justice to the concept of the film and presented a long and boring film to the audience in most parts. After seeing it once, there will be no desire to see it for the second time and there will be sorrow for seeing it for the first time.

The hero of the story was named Gandhi Mahan, and instead of August 16, his birthday was written in the school as August 15 so that he could become great like Gandhi and engage in social reform works like prohibition. No matter how child, teenager or adult, bearing the name of Gandhi Mahan, will always become an object of ridicule, this thing is understood again and again in the film. As a child, Gandhi used to gamble with the toddy seller’s son and the village’s mawali, was beaten up by his father and the greatness of the name Gandhi was imposed on him. Growing up, he becomes a commerce teacher, has a wife and a son, but after being taunted by a drunken beggar, he plays the lottery for a day, goes to bars, drinks, dances and sings because of which His wife and son get angry and leave him. The story is going well but instead of pretending to find them, he befriends the bar man and starts drinking and using his knowledge of commerce helps him to become a big liquor baron. Gradually with the passage of time, incidents and mishaps, Gandhi becomes a big don. One day at a fair, he meets his son Dada alias Dadabhai Naoroji (Dhruv Vikram) who has become the head of the Special Task Force posted in his city and comes to end his liquor and black business empire. There is determination between father and son. The father is forced by his heart and the son takes advantage of this. There comes such an occasion when all the companions of the father die, but only then the bandage of affection for the son on the father’s eyes comes off and the father leaves after trapping the son. Maybe looking for a sequel.

Generally, the stories of father criminal and son police are less visible. Something like this was seen in Amitabh Bachchan’s last journey. This is the story in some of Mithun’s films as well. In Shakti, father Dilip Kumar is a policeman and Amitabh works with goons. Even in Ajay Devgan’s first film Phool Aur Kaante, his father Amrish Puri played the role of a don and Ajay hated this. Ajay Devgan’s film Naajayaz was also a similar story. In the Tamil film Mahan, the writer-director tries to prove every character right, good or a victim of circumstances and is seen trying to justify their deeds or bad deeds. It is true that no person can be completely right and completely wrong, the conflict between right and wrong is the biggest arrow in the command of films. In this film, there is a justification for the mistake of every person. Because of this, the audience remains confused. For this reason, many scenes have come where the audience is not able to connect completely and some incidents have happened in which the audience does not feel any kind of emotion at all. If instead it was molded into a web series, perhaps a better case could have been made.

Vikram is a seasoned artist. He has worked in some gangster films but Mahan’s role is quite different. Mahan sympathizes with Vikram because who names his son ‘Gandhi Mahan’ or teaches him to become Mahatma Gandhi. When he has mastered gambling since childhood, why shouldn’t he gamble when he grows up? Non-drinkers suddenly start drinking and don’t even falter, when does this happen. He dances and sings to the tune and also keeps mentioning Rajinikanth’s film ‘Annamalai’ to increase business. Year after year his income keeps increasing but he is unable to trace his wife and son, while his brother-in-law also comes to invite him to a function. While dancing, he recognizes his son, some fifteen to twenty years later. That too, when he himself is painted. Anger towards the father is bound to be there in the son’s mind, but he is leading the Special Task Force, which means he must have spent a few years working in the police force, so he must have understood the worldliness. In his childhood, he roams around on his father’s scooter and closes his eyes after seeing the movie posters. Such a simple child, who has come to destroy his father’s empire, should he choose the path of violence? When his father named Gandhi has gone on the wrong path then what is this son named Dadabhai Naoroji doing in the police? The writer forgot the director.

Dhruv has a strange coincidence with Vikram. His first film was Aditya Varma which was the Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy. His second film was Varma which was the Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy. Two remakes of the same film and the hero in both was Dhruv Vikram. Mahan is only his third film. He is not even a shadow of his father, nor is anyone as beautiful to look at as him. Leave aside the young artistes, they will have to compete with their own father and they will definitely lose. He has lost badly in this film too. Satyavan (Bobby Simha) and Rocky (Sanath) have got better roles than him and they have worked with full force. Editing of the film has been done by Vivek Harshan, director Karthik’s old friend and only because of him, there is some rhythm in the film, otherwise the story was written in such a convoluted way that there was no hope of any continuity in it. The film’s music was earlier to be composed by Anirudh Ravichander, but in the end, Karthik reposed faith in his partner Santosh Narayanan. All the songs are awesome, although it is clearly visible that the situations of the songs have been created. It is strange to see that school teachers start dancing on break dance songs. The music arrangement of the song ‘Nan Nan’ is of a very new type and ‘Suryattam’ has the fragrance of real rural surroundings. Good music has also saved the film from taking a dive.

There are mistakes in the writing as well as in the direction of the film. The character graph moves very strangely. It is natural to get sudden success, but the audience will find it difficult to understand how winning in gambling or lottery is related to business. The emotional scenes between the father and the son are dramatically annihilated. It will take time for Dhruv Vikram to learn the A-A-E-E of acting and he should have played better in front of his father. It is strange to see that none of the habits of father and son match each other. How does a person who has been submissive and without any bad habits for 40 years of life, starts drinking and gambling overnight and how does his wife and son leave the house because of this? The story of this film was written during the lockdown of Kovid and that’s why no one checked the credibility of the events of this story, directly started the work of making the film. After Jagme Thandiram, this is another poor film by director Karthik. It will be seen a lot because it has been released simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages, although there are many mistakes. Masala can be seen as an entertainer.
