Maharashtra MLC Election: Lok Sabha Elections During 2024, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA alliance suffered a major setback in Maharashtra. At the same time, the Congress-led INDIA got a big benefit. This time the game turned upside down in the Legislative Council elections. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance had fielded its 9 candidates, out of which all 9 won. Its effect will also be seen in the upcoming assembly elections.
A total of 12 candidates were fielded for 11 seats in the MLC elections, out of which 9 were from Mahayuti and 3 from Mahavikas Aghadi. All 9 candidates of Mahayuti won while 2 candidates of MVA won. In this election, MVA had 66 votes, it was hoping that cross voting could happen and all its three candidates could win but this did not happen.
Complete number game of MLC seats
At present, the strength of Maharashtra Assembly is 274. In this context, support of at least 23 MLAs was required to win one seat. BJP has 103 MLAs, Ajit Pawar’s NCP has 40 MLAs and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has 38 MLAs. Apart from this, NDA had the support of 203 MLAs including other allies of Mahayuti and independent MLAs.
In such a situation, it was clear that if the ruling party keeps its camp MLAs intact and somehow manages to garner the support of four MLAs, then 9 seats can be won. This is what happened after the results came. Before the election, the focus was on which party’s MLAs would be breached and which party would be able to keep its MLAs. Because Ajit Pawar’s NCP was formed after breaking away from Sharad Pawar’s NCP and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena broke away. Eknath Shinde formed his own army. In such a situation, this contest was interesting.
How will its impact be seen in the assembly elections?
This election was very important because assembly elections are to be held in the next three months. After the MLC elections held in 2022, the then Maha Vikas Aghadi government of Maharashtra fell and Uddhav Thackeray had to resign from the post of CM. There was cross voting in this election as well and this is where the fall of the government started. At the same time, the matter of cross voting has come to the fore in the elections held on 12th July today. It is being said that 5 votes of MVA got divided which are being told of Congress and these votes went to Ajit Pawar faction.
