Makar Sankranti 2024: In the year 2024, Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15 January. Because Sun God will enter Capricorn at 2:44 am on 14th January 2024, hence as per Udayatithi, Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15th January 2024.
On the day of Makar Sankranti, bathing and donating during the Punya Kaal and Maha Punya Kaal are considered very fruitful. This time the Punya Kaal Muhurta will start on January 15, 2024 at 10.15 AM and will end at 05.40 PM while the Maha Punya Kaal will be at 12.15 PM. It will last from 10 minutes to 6 pm.
One should not do this work even by mistake on Makar Sankranti-
- On the day of Makar Sankranti, do not eat leftover or stale food or Tamasic food, do not take intoxicants even by mistake. Due to this negative energy dominates.
- On this day, do not let any poor person return home empty handed.
- Do not cut or prune any tree inside or outside the house.
- Keep control on your speech. Don’t get angry at anyone.
- One should not consume food on this day without taking bath.

- On the day of Makar Sankranti, after taking bath in the morning, fill a copper pot with pure water, add kumkum, molly, red flowers and offer it to the Sun God while reciting the mantra “Om Ghrini Suryay Namah”.
- By doing tarpan on this day, ancestral evil is removed from the house and the souls of ancestors get peace.
- By bathing in holy rivers one gets freedom from sins and attains salvation. The best bath is in Ganga. If it is not possible then take bath at home on this day by mixing Ganga water in water and sprinkle it in the house also.
- Donating things made of black sesame and jaggery on this day brings blessings of Shani Dev and Surya Dev.
- Consuming and donating black urad khichdi removes Shani Dosha.
- Donating salt will also save you from future troubles.
- Donating ghee increases luck and brings success.
