Maldives Ministers Resigns Who Made Derogatory Remarks Against Pm Modi Ahead Of Mohamed Muizzu India Visit


President Muizzu Visits India: The government of Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu said on Tuesday (September 10) that the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Two ministers who made derogatory comments against PM Modi have resigned. Mohammad Muizzu had suspended three of his ministers who made comments against PM Modi in January this year. The news of the ministers’ resignation has come at a time when Mohammad Muizzu is going to visit New Delhi soon.

According to a Reuters report, Malsha Shariff and Maryam Shiuna from the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, along with fellow minister Abdullah Mahzoom Majeed, were suspended in January after making derogatory comments about PM Modi on social media platform X. However, the resignations coming before the announcement of the president’s visit are a sign that the Muizzu government is serious about building ties with India.

Commented against PM Modi

The ministers who resigned had criticised PM Modi on social media. PM Modi had visited the Indian territory Lakshadweep and praised it as a tourist destination. After this, three Maldivian ministers called PM Modi a “joker”, “terrorist” and “puppet of Israel”. This comment angered India, due to which Indian celebrities launched a campaign on social media to promote local tourism.

‘Muizzu will come to India soon’

Local media reported that Muizzu is planning to visit India soon. This will be Muizzu’s second visit after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi with the heads of states of neighbouring countries. Muizzu had expressed happiness over the invitation and described his visit as “successful”. He had said that strong relations with India would promote prosperity for the Maldives.

India-Maldives relations are improving

Relations between Maldives and India became strained after the election victory of Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu and his demand to replace Indian defense personnel stationed in Maldives. After which India withdrew its troops in May. However, after this, relations have improved after diplomatic talks between the two countries.
