First know when the Indian Army went to Maldives

This incident happened in the year 1988. The Indian Army had come there on the call of the then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Actually, Maldives is very special for India from strategic point of view. This is the reason why India does not want to spoil its relations with this small country under any circumstances. This is the reason why the Indian Army immediately reached there on the call of the then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Why was the Indian Army called?

In 1988, Maldives was struggling with internal strife. At that time, Maldivian businessman Abdulla Luthoofi and his partner Sikka Ahmed Ismail Manik were plotting a coup against the then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. One day news came that Abdullah Luthoofi and Sikka Ahmed Ismail were trying to capture Maldives with the help of mercenaries of Sri Lankan extremist organization ‘Plot’. When these fighters started entering the country and surrounding President Maumoon, he hid in a safe house and called India directly from there and sought help for his safety.

The current Rajiv Gandhi government of India took the words of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom seriously and within a few hours, a contingent of the Indian Army was airlifted to Hulhule Airport. From here, Indian soldiers reached the safe house of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and saved him from the rebels.

What do Indian soldiers do there?

Talking about the present time, there are around 70 Indian soldiers in Maldives. These Indian soldiers have some reconnaissance aircraft, through which they monitor the Indian Ocean. Apart from this, these soldiers also work in providing relief work and medical aid in Maldives. However, some time ago the Indian Navy had deployed one of its Dornier aircraft and two helicopters there, which are mainly used to transport patients from 200 small islands to hospitals.
