Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu Visit China To Meet Xi Jinping Sign 20 Important Agreements Between India PM Modi Row


Maldives-China Relations: Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday (January 10) amid diplomatic dispute with India. Both countries signed 20 important agreements including tourism cooperation. Apart from this, both the countries announced to upgrade their bilateral relations to comprehensive strategic partnership.

Recently the ministers of Maldives met the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi Objectionable remarks were made against Maldives, after which the dispute between Maldives and India increased. Meanwhile, Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu is on a visit to China. During his meeting with Xi Jinping, he said that he is feeling honored that he has come to China on his first state visit.

As soon as Muijju reached China, he started singing praises of the dragon country. He said that he feels good that he is the first foreign head of state to visit China this year. He said that this shows how much importance both sides attach to bilateral relations. According to state news agency Xinhua, Xi stressed that China supports Maldives in developing in accordance with national conditions. He said China supports Maldives in safeguarding national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national dignity.

Belt and Road also included in the agreement
The Office of the President of Maldives said in a post on social media platform These include disaster risk reduction, maritime economy, strengthening investment in the digital economy and the Belt and Road Initiative.

China has also agreed to provide grant assistance to Maldives but the amount was not disclosed. Muizzu and his wife Sajida Mohammed were warmly welcomed in Beijing. President Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan hosted a state banquet in his honor.

Muizzu is considered a pro-China leader. Recently some ministers of Maldives had made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Modi. After that a large number of Indian tourists canceled their trip to Maldives. Maldives is an island nation dependent on tourism.

Apart from talks with Xi, Muizzu is expected to meet Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and other senior officials. He will return to Male on 12 January. Muizzu on Tuesday urged China to intensify efforts to send more tourists to his country.
