India described as second home for the people of Maldives

President Draupadi Murmu Muizzoo, who arrived at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday (7 October 2024) on the invitation of the Prime Minister, said, “Our friendship is based on centuries-old maritime relations, trade and cultural exchanges. India is an important destination for many Maldivians for trade, healthcare, education and tourism. There is another house.”

Praise was given even after bilateral talks

Earlier, Muizzu had also praised India after bilateral talks at Hyderabad House. Muizzu had said, “Maldives will remain a committed friend of our countries and our shared vision of peace and development in our region.” He also invited PM Modi to visit Maldives next year to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

On economic aid to Maldives, Muizzu said, “I would like to thank Prime Minister Modi, the government and the people of India for the generous assistance and cooperation extended to Maldives over the past few years, including the recent issuance of T (Treasury) bills. “Budgetary support in the form of rollover is also included.”

Muizzu also expressed gratitude to the Indian Government

He further said, “I am grateful for the decision of the Government of India to provide assistance in the form of Rs 30 billion in addition to the $400 million bilateral currency swap agreement, which will be helpful in resolving the foreign exchange issues we face. “Our discussions today underlined our shared commitment to pursue further measures that strengthen the economic resilience and stability of the Maldives.”
