Kolkata Doctor Rape Murder Case: Congress and BJP are attacking the Mamata government of the state over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has transferred a close aide of former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh.
Dr Birupaksha Biswas of Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital was transferred to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital in South 24 Parganas district by the West Bengal Health Department on Tuesday (3 August 2024). Dr Birupaksha Biswas was admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after the rape-murder on 9 August 2024. There is a distance of more than 100 km between Kolkata and Bardhaman city.
What did Dr. Biswas say after the transfer?
After the transfer, Biswas said on Wednesday (August 4, 2024) that it was a routine process. He said, “Merit-based counseling was done six months ago based on my post-graduation marks. I was given the option of going to Cooch Behar or Jalpaiguri in North Bengal or Kakdwip in South Bengal. I did not want to go to North Bengal and so I chose Kakdwip.”
Accused of being a close associate of Sandip Ghosh
This order of the state government comes soon after the suspension of former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, who was arrested by the CBI on Monday (August 2, 2024) night on charges of financial irregularities in RG Kar Hospital. The CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh after several days of interrogation. During this, the former principal also had to undergo a polygraph test. The Health Department of West Bengal did not take any action against Sandeep Ghosh until he was arrested.
Dr Birupaksha Biswas is accused of being one of the close associates of Sandeep Ghosh. Not only this, the doctors and medical students who have been continuously agitating since August 9 have also demanded action against him. Senior doctors of different organizations including the West Bengal unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had alleged that Sandeep Ghosh was running a racket in the health department with the help of several associates, of which Biswas was also one.
The audio clip went viral during the agitation
After the Kolkata incident, when junior doctors were protesting, an audio went viral in which Birupaksha Biswas was heard threatening a last year medical student. In the viral audio, Biswas was saying that if his orders were not followed, the students would not get certificates. Biswas had told the media at that time that it was a fake audio clip, which was created using AI.
Dr Birupaksha Biswas admitted that he went to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 after hearing about the train doctor’s death, but claimed that he never visited the crime scene or the third floor of the emergency building.
