CM Mamata Banerjee on Central Government GST on Health: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had demanded withdrawal of GST on life and health insurance, calling it an ‘anti-people taxation policy’. Mamata Banerjee has now tweeted, “Our persistent efforts seem to be bearing fruit. Central Government to bow to our demands of withdrawing/amending the unjust 18% GST on health and life insurance products/policies. More I personally wrote a letter to the Union Finance Minister (see letter below), warning that his decision to impose 18% GST on health and medical insurance would harm vulnerable individuals in securing their insurance coverage. How will it come in the way of maintaining the GST Council? However, this decision is not being taken in good faith as suggested by the Group of Ministers. Coming.”
The TMC chief wrote, “Our leaders have stood strongly against anti-people policies that harm the common people. Our MPs are fighting and our Finance Minister fought very well in the Group of Ministers today. The final GST Council If the decision is in our favour, it will provide much needed relief to millions of families across the country. We are committed to keeping the interests of the people at the forefront of every decision. Eagerly waiting to see and we continue to be the people’s watchdog!”
Our sustained efforts appear to be paying dividends – the Central Government looks like being further pressurized towards finally succumbing to our demands to withdraw/ modify the unjust 18% GST on health and life insurance products/policies.

What did CM Mamata write in the letter to the Finance Minister?
In a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in August, Mamata Banerjee had said, “Imposition of GST on insurance premiums increases the financial burden on the common people. This additional burden makes it difficult for many individuals to take a new policy or continue their existing insurance coverage.” This may become a hindrance due to which they may fall into unexpected financial crisis.
