A man has shared the terrifying reality of being trapped “like a ghost” in his own body for more than a decade. When Martin Pistorius, 47, of Johannesburg, South Africa, was 12, he came home from school with a sore throat. His condition deteriorated rapidly. Investigation revealed that he had cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis of the brain. His body became weak and he lost the ability to speak and control his movements, leaving him mute and wheelchair-bound.
His parents were told that he had an unknown degenerative disease, which had left him with the mental state of a child and that he had less than two years left to live. But his brain returned four years later, despite still being unable to communicate or move, leaving him a prisoner in his own body.
Today Martin is living a new life forgetting his old struggles. (Symbolic photo: Instagram/ martinpistorius)
Martin said some caregivers mistreated them, believing they had no awareness of their surroundings. He was even sexually exploited. He was waiting for the day when someone would notice that his mind had activated again, so that he could be free from his reality. His world changed in 2001, when he was 25, when the day center he stayed at.
