Emphasis on colorful species as per market demand

Under the leadership of T. Damodaran, Director of Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture, Rehman Kheda, Lucknow, continuous work is being done on improving the quality of mango and developing colorful varieties as per the demand of the European market. Varieties named Ambika and Arunima have been released in the market. Awadh Samriddhi Prataji is coming soon. While Awadh Madhurima is in the line of release. The gardeners of Uttar Pradesh will get the most benefit from all these species with better export potential. Gardeners are being made aware by organizing national and international level seminars for better and quality produce.

A three-day seminar organized under the joint aegis of India-Israel was held recently. Before this, an international seminar was also organized on September 21 on the topic of strategies and research priorities for improving the yield and quality of mango. The government will also set up a radiation treatment plant near Jewar International Airport to meet the export standards of the US and European countries. There is no such treatment plant anywhere in North India. This type of treatment plants are available only in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Mango varieties Alphonso, Bombay Green, Totapuri, Brinjalphali from these two places also have the highest share in exports.

Earlier mangoes were sent to Mumbai or Bengaluru for treatment.

Due to lack of treatment plant in the state, at present mangoes are first sent to Mumbai or Bangalore for treatment as per the export standards of the respective countries. After this it is exported again. This wastes a lot of time and resources, which is why the Yogi government is preparing to set up a radiation treatment plant near Jewar International Airport on PPP model. Once the treatment plant starts, it will become easier for the mango growers of Uttar Pradesh to access the markets of US and European countries, because Uttar Pradesh has the highest production of mangoes. Therefore, the gardeners of the state will get the maximum benefit from any new export opportunity.

There are many possibilities for export of mango in the global market. A delegation of Innova Food had met Agricultural Production Commissioner Devesh Chaturvedi last year. In which he told that there is a good demand for Chausa and Langra mangoes in the US and European markets. If its export standards are met then it can be a promising market for Uttar Pradesh, because both these species are produced in Uttar Pradesh only. Only then will the gardeners of Uttar Pradesh directly benefit from it.
