Even today, people take a dip in the holy Ganga on the full moon, Ekadashi, Chauth and Amavasya of this month with the belief of being free from sins. Such is faith which is the biggest strength of religion. Let us now look at the classical side-

Importance of Triveni bath on Mauni Amavasya

According to Vrat Chandrika Utsav Chapter Number 35, Amavasya of Magh month is famous by the name of Mauni Amavasya. Because on this day there is a tradition to take bath in Ganga in silence only. If the day of Mauni Amavasya is Monday, then its virtue is even greater. Taking a bath in Triveni in the month of Magh is considered very important. Therefore, many devotees, men and women, build huts near the Sangam and reside here for the entire month of Magh, which is also called ‘Kapil Vaas’. Probably this word is a corruption of ‘Kalpvas’.

Some people fast for the entire month in the month of Magh. Some people live only on fruit diet. It is very important to follow these rules – sleeping on a mat, not applying oil, not wearing any kind of makeup and living a sober life. The biggest festival of bathing in the month of Magh is ‘Mauni Amavasya’. On this day, there is a crowd to bathe in Ganga in all the cities, but on this day a huge crowd gathers in Prayag.

When the Kumbh was organized in 1930, about 35 lakh people took bath at the Sangam on this Mauni Amavasya day. Some idea of that great gathering can be made from the huge number of people. At that time the sky starts resonating with the loud sound of Mother Ganga. That day, wherever you looked at the confluence of Triveni, only heads were visible. Even if a mustard seed is thrown, it cannot fall down. Seeing the immense faith and devotion of the people towards Ganga, the heart becomes happy. Prayag itself is the king of pilgrimages and how can we describe the confluence of Triveni and then the holy festival of Mauni Amavasya. Therefore, it is not surprising that Triveni Snan has great importance on such an occasion.

Kalidas himself has written that those who take bath at this confluence immediately attain salvation.
“Samudrapalyojak sannipatate, putatmanamshra kritabhishekat. tattva vashodhen vinapi bhuyah, tanutyajo nasti sharirabandah.”

In the sea or around water, pure souls should take bath in the name of God. Due to such a bath, even if the elements do not become poisonous again, there is no bondage of the body after leaving the body. In this way, since ancient times, there is a tradition of taking bath in Ganga in places like Prayag etc. on the day of Mauni Amavasya.
