Meghalaya Assembly Election 2023 Hamlet Dohling Samlin Malngiang Jason Sawkmie May Join NPP


Meghalaya Election 2023: Assembly elections are to be held in Meghalaya, but in the meanwhile the leaders have started changing sides. Three MLAs have resigned from their respective party and LLA posts on Thursday (January 5). With this, preparations for the elections have intensified.

Sources said that Hamlet Dohling (Mylim), Samlin Malanggiang (Sohyeong) and Jason Sokmi (Umsing) may join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). While Dohling and Sokmi were from the People’s Democratic Front, they have resigned from the Malangiang Hill State People’s Democratic Party.

Who are the MLAs?
Dohling, the Minister for Information Technology and Communications in the Conrad Sangma government, was a People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) MLA representing the Mayalim constituency in East Khasi Hills district. Jason Sokmi Mawlong, another PDA MLA representing Umsining in Ri Bhoi district, and Samlin Malangiang, a legislator from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), also submitted their resignations. Malangiang was the MLA of Sohyeong constituency in East Khasi Hills district.

An official of the assembly said that assembly speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has accepted his resignation. Party sources said that he is likely to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). The PDA and the HSPDP are part of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) led by the NPP in the state.

NPP MLA from Phulbari SG Esmatur Momin, former MLA Robinus Syngkon also resigned and joined Trinamool Congress. So far, a total of 11 MLAs have resigned. With this, all parties have stepped up preparations for the Meghalaya assembly elections to be held in March.
