Meghalaya Election: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will campaign for the BJP in the northeastern state in the second week of February for the upcoming assembly elections in Meghalaya. This information was given by the state unit president of Meghalaya, Ernest Mowry on Friday.

Mowry said Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani and Nitin Gadkari would be among the 20 star campaigners of the BJP for the February 27 elections in the state. Mowry said that the chief ministers of other BJP-ruled states would also campaign in the state.

When will PM Modi come?
Ernest Mowry said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi The date of the tour has not been decided yet. Although after February 10, it is possible that on 11-12 PM Modi will address several election rallies in all Khasi, Jaintia and Garo hills areas of the state. The BJP is eyeing to increase its tally of seats in the 60-member house, which is currently only two, so that it can lead the next government in the state.

Will the names of the candidates be announced?
State BJP president Ernest Mowry said that BJP will announce its list of candidates in February after the Election Commission issues the notification for the elections. “We have prepared the list today and we are going to send it to Delhi. We can announce the names of the candidates by February 2,” he said after presiding over a meeting of the state election committee.

What does BJP expect?
According to Mowry, the party will field around 10 women candidates. Expressing confidence that the party will get more seats than the last time in the upcoming elections, he said, “Last time we had predicted victory on 25 seats. This time we have projected 35 seats and we hope to win more seats so that we can lead the government. Mowry said, “We are not planning an alliance with any party. We should wait for the results to find out like-minded parties who are willing to follow our agenda of corruption-free government.”

How will the issues be resolved?
The BJP is an ally of the current ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by Chief Minister Conrad P Sangma’s National People’s Party in the state. Mowry said the party would focus on development in its manifesto. “We do not have good infrastructure in terms of roads (in Meghalaya). People always complain about traffic jams. We don’t have medical or engineering colleges, if we have a double engine government i.e. same party government here in Meghalaya and at the Centre, then all these issues will be resolved.

What did you indicate?
Pointing to the progress in Assam, state BJP president Ernest Mowry said, “Look at the neighboring state. There has been rapid development in terms of roads, colleges and medical colleges. The people of Meghalaya have common aspirations for development. If we get a chance to form the next government (in Meghalaya), we will take it up.”

On the issue of fielding candidates with criminal background, he said the party has not yet received any information about them. He said, “There may be some cases against some candidates, but it has not come to our notice. If we get such information, we will follow the guidelines of the Election Commission.

Asked about the party’s stand on the inner line permit issue, Mowry said the state government has passed an official resolution on it in the assembly and it is now with the Centre. “We will wait for the Centre’s decision.”
