Social media company Meta has made a big announcement in its content moderation policy. The company said that it is closing the third-party fact checking program in America. Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a social media post, “We’re getting rid of fact-checkers and replacing them with community notes like X (formerly Twitter). Starting in the US.”
What do community notes mean?
Till now Facebook used to do fact-checking through third-party programs. After this announcement by Zuckerberg, this program will be closed and Community Notes will come in its place. This feature is currently available on X. In this, it is the users who do the fact checking of any wrong information. After this, if someone posts wrong information, its refutation and full context appears below it.
Why is the company closing its fact-checking unit?
Zuckerberg said fact-checkers have been too politically biased, especially in the US, and have lost trust rather than gained it. In his announcement, Zuckerberg talked about many of the complaints about the fact-checking program, about which Republican and X owner Elon Musk has spoken openly many times. They see them as censorship.
Facebook and Instagram will ease content policy
Zuckerberg also said that Facebook and Instagram will simplify their content policies and eliminate restrictions on issues like immigration and gender.
Zuckerberg trying to reconcile with Trump
These decisions of Meta are being seen as Zuckerberg’s efforts for reconciliation with Trump. In fact, Trump has been a vocal critic of Meta for quite some time and has accused the company of supporting liberal policies and being biased against conservatives. In view of this, Zuckerberg has recently donated to Trump’s inauguration fund. Apart from this, he has also given place to Trump’s associates in the company.
