Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday said the Delhi airport should immediately expedite operations of its CAT III-enabled fourth runway to the satisfaction of civil aviation regulator DGCA for final approval. Delhi airport already has a CAT III-capable runway. CAT III landing is a precision approach, allowing aircraft to land safely in low fog conditions.

The fog in Delhi fluctuated for several hours between 5 am and 9 am on Sunday and dropped to zero at times. Even on Monday, Delhi remained in the grip of dense fog. Nearly 600 flights, both domestic and international, were delayed due to weather conditions in the last 48 hours. To mitigate the situation in future, DGCA will issue a SOP for airlines on better communication and convenience of passengers to minimize inconvenience in view of flight cancellations and delays due to adverse weather.

Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia wrote on Twitter, ‘It is my heartfelt request to all the passengers to support us during this difficult period. All stakeholders are trying their best to minimize the inconvenience to passengers. Incidents of unruly behavior are unacceptable and will be dealt with firmly in line with existing legal provisions. I would like to assure everyone that all stakeholders are working round the clock to mitigate fog related impacts.
