The objective of these institutions is to preserve the educational development and cultural identity of their respective communities. Apart from this, quality education has to be provided. By getting minority status, these institutions get some special rights at the administrative and educational level.

Established in 1920, AMU is one of the most prestigious universities in India. However, its minority status has been a subject of controversy in the Supreme Court. But it has the status of minority university.

Jamia Millia Islamia was given minority status in 2011. The aim of this university is to provide opportunities for the educational development of the Muslim community, although students from all communities study here.

​Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANU), Hyderabad, was established in 1998. This university works for the preservation and promotion of Urdu language and culture and provides opportunities in the field of higher education to minority students.

​Hamdard University, New Delhi was established in 1989. Hamdard University has Muslim minority status. It provides education in the fields of health, pharmacy, Unani medicine etc. and pays special attention to the educational development of Muslim students.

Jesus and Mary College in New Delhi and St. Stephen’s College in Delhi are recognized as minority institutions. These institutions give priority to the educational development of the Christian community. But students from other communities also study.
