Lasith Malinga: Lasith Malinga has once again returned to the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, but this time in IPL 2024 he has returned to the team as a bowling coach. Once again the pair of Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah will do wonders for Mumbai Indians. Bumrah will join the team’s head coach Mark Boucher and batting coach Kieron Pollard.
Before Mumbai Indians, Malinga was playing the role of bowling coach for Mumbai-owned teams. He is the bowling coach of MI New York in Major League Cricket and MI Cape Town in SA20. Malinga has played for Mumbai in IPL from 2009 to 2019. As of now, he will join the team again for the 2024 season.
Through a statement issued by Mumbai Indians, Lasith Malinga said, “It is a matter of pride for me to become the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians and after MI New York and MI Cape Town, my journey in the One Family continues.” He further added, “I am excited to work closely with Mark (Boucher), Pollard, Rohit and the entire team, especially the bowling unit, whose approach I liked last season, and the young MI talent who has the ambition to be good. Jhamta, which was backed by the passionate MI platoon.”
Between 2009 and 2019, Malinga has played 122 matches for Mumbai Indians. During this period, he has taken 170 wickets for the team at an average of 19.80, in which he has given runs at an economy of 7.14. Malinga still remains the sixth bowler taking the most wickets in the IPL.
Won 7 trophies with Mumbai
It is noteworthy that Malinga has spent a total of 13 years with Mumbai Indians since 2009. During this period, he has won 7 trophies in all the leagues, including 4 IPL titles, 2 Champions League titles as a player and Major League Cricket title as a bowling coach. Before this, he had worked as fast bowling coach with Rajasthan Royals.
