Munawwar Rana Demise: Famous poet Munawwar Rana died of a heart attack at PGI, Lucknow on Sunday (January 14). He breathed his last at the age of 71. He was undergoing treatment for a long time. He has left behind such a legacy of ghazals that will always keep him alive in Mushairas. Not only this, whenever a poem is written on mother, Munawwar Rana’s poetry will definitely be remembered. He used to say-
No one calls sadness good, no one calls poison sweet
Yesterday I saw myself in my mother’s eyes, this mirror does not tell us how old we are.

I was the youngest in the house and my mother took my share.
Munawwar Rana used to participate in Mushairas organized in the country and abroad and used to enliven the gathering with his loud, tinkling voice, but his lines describing his mother used to bring tears to the eyes of the people. He used to say-
O darkness, see your face has turned black.
Mother opened her eyes and there was light in the house.
This is how she washes away my sins
When mother is very angry she cries
Munawwar Rana was often in the headlines for his outspoken style and statements. There was controversy over some of his statements. Once he even returned the award on the issue of intolerance.
Received Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘Shahdaba’
Munawwar Rana was born in 1952 in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh but spent most of his life in Kolkata. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu language in 2014 for one of his works ‘Shahdaba’. before this In 2012, he was awarded the Mati Ratan Samman by the Shaheed Research Institute for services to Urdu literature. Munawwar Rana’s daughter Sumaiya Rana is a member of Samajwadi Party.

He used Hindi and Awadhi words and avoided Persian and Arabic. This made his poetry accessible to Indians and underlined his popularity at poetry conferences held in non-Urdu areas. In most of his couplets the center point of love is mother. His Urdu ghazals have been translated into English by Tapan Kumar Pradhan.
In the headlines for his controversial statement
In August 2020, Munawwar Rana had accused former CJI Ranjan Gogoi of allegedly ‘selling himself’ to deliver the Ayodhya verdict. He further said that this is not justice, it is an order. The words he used cannot be written here.
In October 2020, he had given a controversial statement regarding a murder incident committed in France, for which an FIR was also registered against him. He had said that if someone had made dirty cartoons of parents or God, he would have killed that person too. However, later while talking to ABP News, Rana gave clarification on this matter. He said that he does not support any kind of violence.
In August 2021, Munawwar Rana had said that Taliban liberated his country. During an interview, he had said that Taliban cannot be called terrorists but aggressive.
In August 2021 itself, during a TV interview, he had compared the Taliban with Maharishi Valmiki. There was a lot of uproar over his statement and organizations including Valmiki Samaj had filed complaints against him with the police.
