Nagaland CM on LGBTQIA+: Nagaland Chief Minister and NDPP (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party) leader Neiphiu Rio has targeted the Congress for promising to make a separate law for LGBTQIA+ in its manifesto. the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections In the manifesto released for, Congress promised to bring new laws for LGBTQIA+ couples. On this, CM Neiphiu Rio said that this is not our tradition.
‘This is not the tradition of Christianity’
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said, “Senior citizens, disabled people and LGBTQIA+ need sympathy and protection. After much discussion, the Congress party has promised to bring a law for LGBTQIA+ couples and legalize it. This is not our tradition. This is not the tradition of Christianity, therefore such matters should be discussed in detail.”
Last year, the Supreme Court refused to legalize gay marriage, but acknowledged that the community was being discriminated against. The court had directed the authorities to ensure security of people of the LGBTQIA+ community. Regarding this case, the Supreme Court had directed the Central Government to form a committee to investigate the rights and entitlements of homosexual persons.

The Supreme Court had refused to grant the right to marry.
The LGBTQIA+ community was not given the right to marry by the Supreme Court. The Constitution bench of five judges hearing this petition included Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice SK Kaul, Justice SR Bhatt, Justice Hema Kohli and Justice PS Narasimha. The court had said that common people need to be sensitive in this direction.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge released the party’s election manifesto on April 5, 2024 in the presence of senior party leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal, in which it promised five pillars of justice and 25 guarantees under them.
