Vandalizing Several Crosses Cemetery: A 22-year-old man was arrested from Navi Mumbai on Sunday for vandalizing 18 ‘crosses’ at a graveyard attached to Mumbai’s famous Mahim Church. Police gave this information. A police official said that the motive behind the act is being probed. After allegedly breaking the ‘cross’ in the graveyard of St Michael’s Church in suburban Mahim, Mumbai, the accused sat in the church for some time on Saturday morning.
The accused youth works in his uncle’s shop. He was arrested from Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai through technical analysis by the special team. His picture also went viral on social media. The police officer said, “Some things have come to the fore during the investigation which cannot be shared, as this matter is related to a religious place.” FIR was registered under The police is investigating the matter in detail.
Probing all angles – DCP
The DCP said that it was a serious crime and added that they are probing from all angles, including the possibility of the accused conspiring with someone else. He said that according to the video footage they received, Ansari was in the church for some time after the sacrilege and did not immediately flee from the spot. Police is trying to find out why he had gone to Mahim and whether any of his relatives live there.
An FIR was lodged against unknown persons
Soon after the incident on Saturday (January 7), an FIR was registered against unknown persons at Mahim police station on the basis of a complaint filed by the church. Several members of the Catholic community and political leaders had earlier condemned the incident and urged quick action in the matter. Nationalist Congress Party spokesperson Clyde Crasto Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shindeurged Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Mumbai Police to take “immediate cognizance” of the issue.
