Maorisbot Malware Cyber Threat: Android users in India are increasingly becoming victims of cyber fraud. The latest case is of Maorisbot malware, which is misusing people’s personal and important information by collecting it on the pretext of fake traffic challan.
According to a report by CloudSEK, many such cases of cyber fraud have been reported from across the country, where Android users are receiving fake traffic challan messages on WhatsApp. In these messages, users are asked to download an app, as soon as the app is downloaded, hackers steal your special and important information through the app.
How MaorisBot malware works
According to the CloudSEK report, first of all the user gets a message of fake traffic challan on his WhatsApp. The worrying thing is that this challan looks similar to the traffic challan of Karnataka Police. In the message, the user is asked to install an app to pay the challan. After installing, the app hides itself and is not visible on the home screen.
After this, the app asks for many permissions from the user. After getting the permission, the malware steals many important and personal information present in the device like contact numbers, messages etc. This data of the users is sent to the Telegram bot, which is controlled by the hackers. After the data is stolen, hackers can also make unauthorized transactions by intercepting the OTP.
Hackers have cheated millions of rupees
According to the CloudSEK report, most cases of Maorisbot malware have been reported from Gujarat and Karnataka. It is worth noting that most of the people who have become victims of cyber fraud are using Jio and Airtel SIMs.
So far this malware has been found in more than 4,400 devices. Cyber criminals have stolen more than 16 lakh rupees so far. This is a new way of cheating people online.
How to avoid this MaorisBot malware?
- To avoid such cyber threats, do not install any unknown app.
- If you install an app from the Play Store, then take special care while giving permission after installation, because the entire fraud plan starts only after giving permission to the app.
- Apart from this, always download apps from Play Store only.
- Also pay attention to whether the phone and app are updated with the latest security patch or not.
- Apart from this, the users themselves should also remain updated regarding cases of cyber fraud.
