Children Deaths Study : In India, newborn deaths are occurring between 7 days to 11 months of birth. A shocking claim has been made in a new research. This study, published in JAMA Network Open, is based on the analysis of more than 2.3 lakh deaths of children under 5 years of age recorded in five reports of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS).

Children are dying within how many days of birth?
In this study, the team of researchers divided the infant death rate into four parts. First – early neonatal i.e. first 7 days after birth of the child, second – late neonatal i.e. 8-28 days, third – post neonatal i.e. 29 days to 11 months and fourth – baby is 12-59 months. Researchers found that earlier 33.5 per 1,000 children died in early neonatal, but this has decreased and now it has become 20.3. At the same time, the death rate in late neonatal period has decreased from 14.1 to 4.1 deaths per thousand children. The mortality rate after newborn has come down from 31.0 to 10.8 per thousand children.

Researchers found in this study that the mortality rate of children has also decreased with time. From 2016 to 2021, the mortality situation has worsened at every stage in some states and union territories. If this pattern continues then these states will not be able to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Let us tell you that the SDG of United Nation is to reduce the child mortality rate to 25 deaths per thousand in the first 5 years and 12 deaths per thousand survivors in the first 28 days by 2030. Researchers from Harvard, Toronto University and IIT Mandi have also set different targets in this regard. The target was to reduce the early neonatal mortality rate to 7 per thousand in 21 states in 2021, which could not be achieved, which has increased the concern.
