A new pilot has been launched across NHS trusts in England on Monday. Actually, the biggest reason behind its launch was to protect the child from head and brain injuries during delivery. 9 maternity units will participate in this scheme. This pilot is expected to improve maternity care for women and babies. According to DHSC, about 2,490 babies were reported to have brain injuries during or after birth in 2021.

As part of the Perinatal Brain Injury (ABC) pilots, will staff be able to identify if a baby is showing signs of distress during delivery? It will also help the staff deal with emergencies when the baby’s head gets stuck in the mother’s pelvis during a cesarean delivery.

There are six hospitals in the north-west of England which will take part in a pilot investigating caesarean birth. The Countess of Chester Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Obstetric units at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust and St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will take part in the fetal decline detection pilot.

DHSC said that if the pilot is deemed successful, the program could be rolled out nationally next year. Baroness Gillian Merron, Minister for Patient Safety, Women’s Health and Mental Health, said: “This is an important step towards preventing preventable brain injuries in babies. Because we work to ensure that all women and babies receive safe, personalized and compassionate care.
