Assassinated Indian Political Leaders List: Odisha’s Health Minister Naba Kishore Das was shot dead on Sunday (January 29). Naba Das, who had arrived at the inauguration of a public grievance center at Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda district, was allegedly fired upon by a policeman Gopal Das. After this, the minister was air-lifted in critical condition and brought to Apollo Hospital in capital Bhubaneswar. He was operated here but his life could not be saved. The Odisha government along with the family has been deeply shocked by the death of the minister. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has said that he is shocked and distressed. He has described the death of the minister as the biggest loss for the state and said that Naba Das was like an asset for the state government and the Biju Janata Dal. Sidhu Moosewala
Last year (29 May 2022), Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Musewala was killed by firing bullets in Jawaharke village of Mansa, Punjab. About 30 bullets were fired at him. Notorious gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldie Brar gang are accused of murdering Sidhu Musewala. According to information, Goldie Brar, who operated his gang from Canada, allegedly got Sidhu Musewala murdered at the behest of Lawrence Bishnoi. 36 people are named in the case. Sidhu Musewala’s father Balkaur Singh is currently fighting for justice.
Kamlesh Tiwari
Kamlesh Tiwari was a leader and founder of the Hindu Samaj Party. In 2017, he formed his own party. Kamlesh Tiwari was accused of making objectionable remarks for Mohammad Pangbar. As the dispute escalated, Tiwari was also arrested but was later released. On October 18, 2019, Tiwari was in his office in Lucknow, when two men wearing saffron kurtas, Farid-ud-Din Shaikh and Ashfaq Shaikh, arrived to give him a box of sweets. During this, a colleague of Tiwari had gone to bring cigarettes. When he returned, he saw that Tiwari’s throat had been slit. He was taken to the hospital, during treatment the doctors declared him brought dead. The address of a sweet shop in Surat, Gujarat was written on the box of sweets. Revolver and knife were found in the box.
Govind Pansare
On February 16, 2015, when CPI leader Govind Pansare and his wife Uma were out on a morning walk in their society, two bike-borne men opened fire on them. Pansare and his wife were injured. Both were taken to Aster Aadhar Hospital in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, where his wife slipped into a coma. On 20 February 2015, Pansare was taken to Breach Candy Hospital, where he died during treatment. His wife was discharged from the hospital on 4 March 2015. Five people, including Sameer Gaikwad, a member of the Sanatan Sanstha group, which ran a mobile repair shop, were accused of killing Pansare.
Pramod Mahajan
On the morning of 22 April 2006, former Union Minister and BJP leader Pramod Mahajan was shot by his estranged younger brother Praveen with his licensed pistol in an apartment in Mumbai. Four bullets were fired at him. Seriously injured Mahajan was admitted to Hinduja Hospital. He struggled with death for 13 days. He died of cardiac arrest on 3 May 2016. The shooter Praveen Mahajan had surrendered to the police. He accused his brother of humiliating him and not giving him his rights. On 18 December 2007, Praveen was sentenced to life imprisonment. Praveen died on 3 March 2010 due to brain haemorrhage during his parole period.
Krishnanand Rai
On 29 November 2005, BJP leader Krishnanand Rai was shot dead while returning from a family wedding ceremony in his native village. The attackers had ambushed them on the way. A total of seven people were killed in the incident. Eight people including Bahubali leader Mukhtar Ansari and Afzal Ansari were accused of killing Krishnanand. Ansari was accused of ordering the murder. Afroz alias Chunnu Pehalwan, a person allegedly involved in the murder, was arrested in June 2014.
Haren Pandya
On March 26, 2003, Hiren Pandya, the then Home Minister of Gujarat, was murdered in the Law Garden area of Ahmedabad. The incident was carried out when he had gone for a morning walk. His body was found in the car. It was told that his body was lying in the car for two hours. In 2007, a special POTA court sentenced Asgar Ali, the main accused in the Hyderabad-based case, to life imprisonment, while seven others were sentenced to life imprisonment, two to 10 years and one to five years. VHP leader Jagdish Tiwari was accused of attempt to murder in the case. On 29 August 2011, all 12 convicts were acquitted of murder charges by the Gujarat High Court but upheld other charges, including criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder. In July 2019, the Supreme Court overturned the Gujarat High Court verdict and convicted 12 people for the murder of Haren Pandya.
Phoolan Devi
Samajwadi Party leader Phoolan Devi, who was traveling from Dasyu Sundari to Parliament, was shot at by three assailants on Ashok Road in Delhi on 25 July 2001. Phoolan Devi was hit by nine bullets and her body guard was hit by two bullets. Phoolan Devi was taken to Lohia Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. 11 people were made accused in the case. A few days after the incident, the accused named Sher Singh Rana was arrested. The accused had said that he had avenged the Behmai massacre. Rana had escaped from Tihar Jail in 2004 and was caught again two years later. In August 2014, Rana was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and the other ten accused were acquitted. Rana was granted bail in October 2016. In 2018, Phoolan Devi’s sister Munni claimed that Rana was framed under a political conspiracy while Devi was killed at the behest of Umed Singh.
Beant Singh
On 31 August 1995, former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh was assassinated in a suicide bomb blast at the Secretariat complex in Chandigarh. 17 other people including 3 Indian commandos also lost their lives in the blast. Allegedly a Khalistani terrorist had carried out the suicide blast. According to reports, Dilawar Singh Babbar of Babbar Khalsa International acted as the suicide bomber. Jagtar Singh alias Tara was said to be the mastermind of the blast. An accused named Balwant Singh Rajoana was also convicted. In the case, on 19 February 1996, the sessions court of Chandigarh filed a charge sheet against 12 people, including three NRI fugitives. Rajoana’s death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment on 28 March 2012. Jagtar Singh alias Tara was arrested in Bangkok on 7 January 2015.
