Rishi Sunak has resigned from the post of Leader of the Opposition in the British Parliament on Wednesday (30 October 2024). On this occasion, while mentioning some memories of the festival of Diwali, he said that two years ago, during the festival of lights, he was appointed the first Prime Minister of Indian origin.
Sunak was serving as interim leader of the Conservative Party until a new leader was elected after the Conservative Party’s defeat in the general election in July. Sunak said, ‘‘I became the party leader during Diwali and I am resigning from the post during this festival.’’

Starmer said, "I wish a very happy Diwali to everyone celebrating Diwali in Britain and around the world. It is a time to celebrate together and focus on a bright future."
