Opposition On UCC In Uttarakhand: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Saket Gokhale has cornered the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand. On Tuesday (February 6, 2024), he criticized the rules brought under UCC for those in live-in relationships and said that BJP has now entered people’s bedrooms.

This is an intrusion of the BJP government into the lives of consensual adults living together in the state. This is not the job of state governments.”

While opposing the UCC, AIUDF Chief and MP Badruddin Ajmal said, “When the government fails, it takes similar steps through state assemblies. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also does this from time to time. They want to keep PM Modi happy so that he can remain the Chief Minister for some time. This bill should be thrown in the dustbin.”

According to the UCC in Uttarakhand, if a person remains in a live-in relationship for more than a month without recording the statement, they can be punished with jail up to three months or a fine of Rs 10,000 or both .
