Pakistan Parliament: Pakistan’s Parliament on Wednesday (March 13) passed a resolution demanding reversal of the death sentence given to former Prime Minister and PPP founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The resolution was passed when a few days ago the apex court said that the former Prime Minister was not given a fair trial.

Bhutto was hanged in 1979 by the military regime of General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. Earlier, on March 6, the High Court, while reviewing the case, said in a unanimous opinion that a fair trial was not conducted in the case of former Prime Minister Bhutto and proper procedure was not followed.

‘Convicting Bhutto is a grave violation of justice’

On 18 March 1978, the Lahore High Court sentenced Bhutto to death for ordering the assassination of Ahmed Raza Kasuri, one of the founding members of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). According to ‘Geo News’, the resolution adopted by the National Assembly and introduced by PPP’s Shazia Mary considered Bhutto’s trial and conviction as a ‘gross miscarriage of justice’.

Request made to High Court

In 2011, the then President Asif Ali Zardari had requested the High Court to reconsider the conviction of his father-in-law Bhutto in the murder case and the hanging on April 4, 1979. Zardari was elected President for the second time on March 10. The resolution praised the High Court for accepting the ‘gross injustice’ done to Bhutto 44 years ago in its decision.
