Pakistan Punjab government seeks time from Lahore High Court to name Shadman Chowk after Shaheed Bhagat Singh.


Shaheed Bhagat Singh: Pakistan’s Punjab government on Friday sought more time from the High Court on the issue of naming Shadman Chowk after freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Lahore High Court Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza was hearing a petition by ‘Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Pakistan’ during this time.

According to news agency PTI (language), the petition sought contempt action against three top officials of the provincial and district government for not following the court order to rename Shadman Chowk after Bhagat Singh.

High Court had given this order

In fact, in the year 2018, the High Court had ordered the Punjab government to name Shadman Chowk in Lahore after Bhagat Singh. Punjab government’s Assistant Advocate General Imran Khan told the court during the hearing, “The government should be given more time to issue the notification to name Shadman Chowk after the freedom fighter.”

The petition will be heard on this day

Petitioner’s lawyer Khalid Jama Kakar argued that there has already been a lot of delay in this matter. High Court Advocate General Imran Khan Accepted the plea and adjourned the hearing till June 7.

Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh was hanged 93 years ago on March 23, 1931 in Lahore. At the time of hanging he was only 23 years old. Apart from Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were also hanged. In India, March 23 is remembered as his martyrdom day.
