Paracetamol is a medicine which people often use in case of fever, headache and body ache. A recent study says that this medicine can be harmful for your health. Researchers at the University of Nottingham, Britain, have recently revealed that excessive consumption of paracetamol can harm people’s health. Especially elderly people i.e. people above 65 years of age may be at increased risk of kidney disease. This means that its consumption can cause many side effects. Excessive consumption of paracetamol in a short period of time can have adverse effects on the liver.
The risk of liver damage increases
If you take 4 grams of paracetamol daily, the chances of liver damage increases. Problems like jaundice and liver damage may also occur. In some cases, this condition may resolve with time, but the risk remains. There may also be problems like red rashes on the skin, difficulty in breathing, allergies and gas and acidity. In rare cases, short-term use may also cause immediate kidney damage.
Kidney damage may occur
Consuming paracetamol for a long time increases the chances of complete liver damage. In the long run, this condition can take the form of chronic liver disease, due to which the liver can get completely damaged. In severe cases, liver transplant may also be required. Along with this, with prolonged use of paracetamol, kidney function gradually deteriorates.
Risk of heart attack and stroke increases
People who take paracetamol regularly may develop tolerance. This means that the body gets used to the medicine and the usual dosage is no longer effective. So when it is needed, the medicine does not work. Apart from this, taking paracetamol for a long time also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. This can also affect mental health and problems like depression and anxiety can increase. Therefore, take paracetamol only when needed and in the dose prescribed by the doctor. Overdose or consuming it without thinking can cause serious side effects.
