During Pitru Paksha, ancestors come to earth from Pitri Lok. Therefore, performing Puja in their name during this period gives peace to their souls. They also get Moksha (salvation).

Pitru Paksha, also known as Shradh, is performed for the peace of the souls of our ancestors. Shradh Paksha is considered very auspicious for the worship of ancestors and tarpan etc.

During Pitru Paksha, our ancestors come to Earth from Pitru Lok. Therefore, it is customary to perform their Shradh, Tarpan, and Pinddaan etc. on these days. It is believed that by performing Shradh etc. of ancestors, a person attains salvation.

Shradh means to please your ancestors with devotion. According to Sanatan belief, the offering made with true devotion for the satisfaction of the soul of the relatives who have left their bodies is called Shradh.

It is believed that the god of death, Yamraj, frees the souls on the day of Shraadh, so that they can go to their relatives and receive the offerings. Anyone whose relatives, whether married or unmarried, a child or an elderly person, a man or a woman, have died are called ancestors.

In Pitru Paksha, ancestors come to earth from the mortal world and bless their family members. In Pitru Paksha, offerings are made to ancestors for the peace of their souls. When ancestors are happy, there is peace and happiness in the house.

Every year during Pitru Paksha, Pinddaan, Tarpan and Hawan etc. are performed for the ancestors. Everyone performs Shradh for their ancestors according to their death date.

It is believed that those who do not offer tarpan to their ancestors during Pitru Paksha are affected by Pitra Dosh. By performing Shraddha, their souls get satisfaction and peace. They get pleased with you and bless the entire family. Every year people go to Gaya and offer Pind Daan for the peace of the souls of their ancestors.

Every soul needs food, water and peace of mind and only its family members can fulfill this need. It expects from its family members only. In Shraddha, ancestors hope that their sons and grandsons will satisfy them by offering Pind Daan and Tilanjali. With this hope, they come to Earth from Pitralok.

This is the reason why in Hindu scriptures every Hindu householder has been asked to perform Shraddha in Pitru Paksha. Many other works are also performed with devotion. But here Shraddha means Tarpan and Pind Daan performed for the ancestors in Pitru Paksha (from Ashwin Krishna Paksha Pratipada to Amavasya).
