Pitru Paksha 2024: In Hinduism, Pitru Paksha has a special significance and during Pitru Paksha, every person should perform the Shradh of his three previous generations (father, grandfather and great grandfather) as well as maternal grandparents.
In the scriptures, the period of Pitru Paksha is called the collective fair of ancestors. This is the time when the ancestors come to the earth for one fortnight i.e. 15 days. In such a situation, whatever work or donation the family members do for their ancestors at this time, they receive it. On receiving this, the ancestors get satisfied and bless their lineage to flourish.
When is the first Shraddha of Pitru Paksha?
Pitru Paksha starts from Bhadrapada Purnima and ends on Ashwin Amavasya (Ashwin Amavasya 2024). But generally, the beginning of Pitru Paksha is considered from the next day of Bhadrapada Purnima i.e. from the Pratipada date of Ashwin month. In such a situation, Pitru Paksha will start from Wednesday, September 18, 2024 and on this day the first Shradh will be performed for the ancestors.
First Shradh (Pitru Paksha 2024 Day 1)
The first Shradh takes place on the day of the beginning of Pitru Paksha. In such a situation, Pitru Paksha is starting from the Pratipada date of Ashwin Shukla or 18 September 2024 and the first Shradh of Pitru Paksha will be performed on this day. This Pratipada Shradh is also known as Padwa Shradh.

Pratipada Tithi will start on 18th September at 08:04 AM and will end on 19th September at 04:19 AM. The time for Pratipada Shradh on this day will be from 11:30 AM to 03:30 PM. That means you should complete the rituals related to Pratipada Shradh before the end of afternoon.

It is said in the scriptures that Shradh rituals should never be performed before sunrise or after sunrise. Shradh or Pinddaan should always be performed at the time of rising sun. Therefore, the time from 11:30 am to 03:30 pm is considered good for Shradh and Pinddaan. Along with this, rituals like Shradh, Tarpan or Pinddaan should be performed only in the Muhurta like Kutup, Rohin.

- Qutup Muhurta: 18th September, from 11:50 am to 12:30 pm (Shraddh, Tarpan and Pinddaan should be performed in this Muhurta)
- Rauhin Muhurta: September 18, from 12:39 pm to 01:27 pm
- Afternoon time: 01:27 PM to 03:54 PM
Importance of Pratipada Shradh (Pratipada Shradh Significance)
There are a total of 15 dates of Pitru Paksha and the Shradh performed on different dates has its own importance. The Shradh performed on the first date of Pitru Paksha is called Pratipada Shradh. On this day, the Shradh of those ancestors is performed who died on the Pratipada date of any month. On the other hand, if there is no person from the maternal side i.e. maternal side to perform the Shradh, then the Shradh of maternal grandparents can be performed on the Pratipada date of Ashwin Shukla. Then, no matter on which date they died.
