Bekal Enthusiast, a renowned poet and poet of Hindi and Urdu literature, was awarded the Padma Shri by the President in 1976 for his contribution to literature. In view of his continuous services to the party, the then Rajiv Gandhi government nominated Bekal Enthusiast as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1986.

After the country got independence, general elections were being held in the country for the first time in the year 1952. Then Congress President and Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru had come to Gonda for election campaign. During the election rally, Bekal enthusiasts welcomed Shaheed Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Inter College, Gonda by singing the poem “Kisan Bharat Ka”. After listening to the poem, Nehru was mesmerized and said that this is our enthusiastic poet. Since then his name became Bekal Enthusiast.

With the inspiration of Nehru, he joined Congress and entered politics. People close to Bekal Enthusiast say that Nehru had given around Rs 35 thousand to build his house in Balrampur. Despite opposing ideologies, he always remained very close to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Bekal Enthusiast was born on June 1, 1924 in a landlord family in Gaur Ramvapur village of Utraula tehsil area. His real name is Mohd. Was Shafi Khan. His father’s name was Zafar Khan Lodi and mother’s name was Bismillah. When the Bekal enthusiast read Sher for the first time in 1942 at MPP Inter College, Balrampur, he was studying in class seven.

His father did not like him because of his fondness for poetry. His works were filled with nature as well as the feeling of village love, social harmony and patriotism. Bekal Enthusiast had proved his talent to the world by creating excellent literature in both Hindi and Urdu languages. More than 20 of his books were published in various poetic genres like Geet, Ghazal, Nazm, Muktak, Rubai and Doha etc.
