Preserved Umbilical Cord: A couple in Haryana became parents for the first time in 2010. Their first child was born through normal delivery. Within 10 days of birth the child started having fever and difficulty in breathing. He was admitted to the ICU and ventilatory support was started. The child had pneumonia and sepsis, due to which he died within 6 weeks. After four abortions in the next 11 years i.e. till 2021, the couple had a child by cesarean, in which the same symptoms were found. He also died after 3 months due to not being able to breathe properly. In such a situation, the question arises that despite such a gap, similar symptoms are found in the newborn. Know from experts…
what is the reason
The death of two children and four abortions were recently explained by doctors with the help of the umbilical cord. A flexible, tubular structure between the fetus and the mother’s cord, which the couple kept in memory. Genetic analysis of the umbilical cord identified a mutation in the CTFR gene, which causes cystic fibrosis. The same mutation was examined in that couple, in which the same causative factors were found. Meaning, out of the two genes, one was functional and the other was non-functional.
what do doctors say
Regarding this, doctors say that there are often no symptoms when there is a mutation, but it seems that both the newborns who died within a few days of birth inherited a mutated Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene from the patients, which causes Disease and its associated risks increase. Doctors say that if initially treating doctors find any such problem in a child, then they should do a genetic study. This will help those couples in future who are looking for the option of IVF for a second child.
Couple’s daughter does not have such symptoms, why
Doctors say that the couple has a daughter, who was born in 2014 without any medical problem, the effect of mutated gene was not seen in her, which is like a coincidence but now the couple wants a son. Doctors say that even in cases of early death due to rare disorders like cystic fibrosis, genetic testing of any preserved sample of a previous child, such as the umbilical cord, can help in finding the exact cause.
If the genetic trend is confirmed, as in the case of this couple from Haryana, a process may be undertaken to identify genetic differences in embryos created with in vitro fertilization (IVF) before transferring the embryos into the uterus. IVF clinic heads say it can help reduce the chance of transferring an embryo with a specific genetic condition or certain chromosome abnormalities, therefore reducing the risk of a baby being born with a genetic condition. .
