How many prisoners died
817 prisoners have died unnatural deaths between 2017 and 2021 in jails across the country. In which the number of prisoners committing suicide is high. According to statistics, the number of deaths in jail has seen a continuous increase since 2019. So far in 2021, most deaths have been recorded as suicide (80 percent).
What do the figures say?
National In the Prison Statistics India Report, published every year by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), deaths in prison have been classified as natural or unnatural. On the report, the committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd) Amitav Rai said that out of 817 unnatural deaths, 660 were suicides. During this period, maximum number of 101 suicides have been recorded in Uttar Pradesh. According to the data, Punjab and Bengal are the states with the highest number of suicides in Uttar Pradesh during the five years i.e. from 2017 to 2021. Where in Punjab 63 prisoners and in Bengal 60 prisoners have committed suicide.
Jails of the capital Delhi
40 prisoners have committed suicide in the Union Territory of Delhi during 2017-2021. Suicides have been recorded. In these five years, 462 prisoners died due to old age and 7,736 prisoners died due to disease. A total of 817 unnatural deaths occurred in Indian prisons between 2017-2021, of which 660 were suicides and 41 were murders. During this period, 46 deaths were related to accidental deaths, while seven prisoners died due to attack by outside elements and negligence of jail staff.
