Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti 2023: Every year 7th May is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in Jorasanko Haveli, Kolkata, Bengal.

Rabindranath Tagore was a poet, musician, painter and writer. He became famous by the name of Gurudev. He played an important role in giving India a new identity at the international level. Tagore is also the author of the country’s national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’. But he decorated the national anthems of not only one but two countries with his pen. Kadambari Devi: The relationship between Kadambari Devi and Tagore was that of brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Kadambari Devi was the wife of Tagore’s elder brother Jyotindranath, who was married as a child. Tagore’s mother died when he was only 7 years old. After this, at the age of 7, Tagore became friends with Kadambari Devi. Kadambari Devi was 12 years old at that time. The relationship between these two was seen with suspicion. After this Tagore’s father Devendra Babu decided to get him married. At the age of 22, Tagore got married to 10-year-old Mrinalini Devi. Shortly after Tagore’s marriage, Kadambari Devi committed suicide by drinking poison. After Kadambari’s death, Tagore also wrote a book called Bhanga Hriday (Broken Heart).

Mrinalini Devi: Mrinalini Devi was Tagore’s wife, who remained devoted to Tagore throughout her life. Mrinalini Devi had five children from Tagore. But Mrinalini died at the age of 29 due to illness. Tagore wrote a book ‘Samarpan’ dedicated to Mrinalini.

Annapurna Turkhud: Annapurna Turkhud was the daughter of Tagore’s teacher. After Tagore went to England, his brother Satyendranath Tagore sent him to Dr. Atmaram Pandurang Turkhurd’s house in Bombay for two months, where he learned English. Tagore was then 17 years old. Dr. Atmaram Pandurang had an 18 year old daughter, whose name was Annapurna Turkhud. She was impressed by Rabindranath and fell in love with him. However, the relationship of both could not progress further. It is mentioned in Dutta and Robinson’s book ‘Married Minded Man’ written by Tagore.

Victorio Ocampo: At the age of 63, Tagore befriended 34-year-old Victoria Ocampo in Argentina. Victoria Ocampo transformed Tagore from a poet to a skilled painter. Tagore gave a special place to Victori in his music. Tagore used to call Vicario Vijaya.
