According to Skanda Purana (Vaishnav section, Ayodhya Mahatmya Chapter 1), Ayodhya is situated on the banks of Saryu. That divine city is full of supreme beauty. Usually many ascetic saints reside inside it. The Puri where all the kings like Surya, Ikshvaku etc. will be ready to take care of the people, on whose banks the river named Punya Saryu originating from Manasarovar will always be beautiful and on its banks there is the hum of whirlpools and chirping of birds. Gangaji has emerged from the toe of Lord Vishnu’s right foot and Saryuji, the auspicious one, has emerged from the toe of his left foot. Therefore, both these rivers are most sacred and worshiped by all the gods. By merely taking bath in these, a person can eradicate the sin of Brahmahatya.

‘Ayodhya’ is adorned with the combination of Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra.

Akar (A) means Brahma, Yakar (Ya) is the name of Vishnu and Dhakar (Dha) is the form of Rudra, the combination of all these makes the name ‘Ayodhya’ beautiful. Mahapatakas like Brahmahatya etc. along with all the sub-patakas cannot fight with this Puri, hence it is called ‘Ayodhya’. This is the Adipuri of Lord Vishnu and is situated on the Sudarshan Chakra of Vishnu. Therefore, there is a very charitable woman on earth. Who can describe the glory of this Puri, where Lord Vishnu resides with reverence.

The position of this Ayodhya area is from Sahastradhara-Tirtha up to one yojana in the east direction and from a place called Sam up to one yojana in the west direction, from Saryutta up to one yojana in the south direction and from Tamsa up to one yojana in the north direction. Ayodhya is said to be shaped like a fish.
