Ram Kewat Sanwad: You must have heard many incidents related to Lord Shri Ram, but today we will describe the conversation between Lord Shri Ram and Kevat which happened between them during their exile. After going on exile, Lord Shri Ram, Mother Sita and Lakshman ji had to cross the river Ganga. At that time he met Kevat. To cross the river, he had to accept only one condition, after fulfilling the condition the boatman made Lord Shri Ram cross the river.
What was the boatman’s condition?
During the exile of Lord Shri Ram, Mother Sita and Lakshman ji, they had to cross the Saryu river. Lord Shri Ram met Kevat on the banks of river Saryu. Shri Ram asked for a boat from the boatman. But the boatman put a condition that he should wash Ram ji’s feet before boarding the boat. Lord Shri Ram accepted the boatman’s condition and allowed him to wash his feet. After hearing this, the boatman’s happiness knew no bounds and he brought a plate to wash the feet and washed the feet of Lord Shri Ram.
Meaning – Shri Ram asked the boatman for a boat, but he did not bring it, he said – I have understood your secret. Everyone says about the dust of your lotus feet that it is some herb that transforms a human being.
While washing the feet, the boatman became sad when the other foot got covered in mud, then Shri Ram stood on one leg. The boatman became sad seeing the Lord on one leg and asked him to take support of his head. Hearing these words of the boatman, Lord Ram placed his hand on the boatman’s head and flowers started raining from the sky. The boatman and his family members drank the nectar of the Lord’s feet and took Shri Ram across.
Meaning – After washing his feet and drinking that water (Charanodak) himself along with his entire family, first (through that great virtue) he crossed his ancestors across the ocean of life and then happily took Lord Shri Ramchandraji across the river Ganga.
When Lord Shri Ram, Mother Sita and Lakshman ji got down from the boat of the boatman, Lord Shri Ram had nothing to give to the boatman, so Mother Sita took off her ring and gave it to the boatman.
The boatman who helped Lord Ram cross the Ganga was a tortoise in his previous birth. It is believed that when the earth was submerged, Kevat was born in the form of a turtle. The boatman meditated for many years in the form of a turtle. Seeing his penance, God gave him the incarnation of a boatman.
