Review: Akarsh, son of famous writer-actor Akash Khurana of Mahesh Bhatt camp, has done a great job in writing and directing entertaining films and web series in the last few years. Caravan (Irrfan, Dulquer Salmaan, and Mithila Parkar) was a very good road trip film directed by him. The famous film ‘Rashmi Rocket’ directed by him on Zee 5 has been released recently. Although Taapsee Pannu gets abused by Internet trolls all day long, after the release of the trailer of this film, she was trolled even more for her ‘manly’ look. Well done in a way because the original objective of the film was to raise voice against gender test in sports. The film is a family and entertaining film. Efforts should be made that girls interested in sports get to see this film so that its message reaches all of them. The film is accurate and interesting too. Ignore the little formulaic things, then the film touches somewhere inside.
Taapsee Pannu needed a film where she could do something other than her image. In this film, she has tried her best to bring something new, but she is not a trained actress, so her ‘I’ is visible in the film. The story is about Rashmi, a girl from Bhuj who runs at the speed of a rocket. That’s why it is called rocket. Before the earthquake of Bhuj, his father teaches him that victory or defeat does not matter, it is important that you participated. Formula but appropriate. Rashmi from childhood turns young and drinks wine with senior officers at the army camp in Bhuj, where she meets Captain Gagan Thakur (Priyanshu), the track and field coach of the army. As the formula goes, a rocket-speed race, an army man’s feat of running to save his life, Captain and Rashmi fall in love after a sexy dance in the village. The captain sends her to a running competition where Rashmi breaks many records while coming and becomes jealous of the daughter of the selector of the Indian team. Rashmi is accused that she is not a girl but a boy. A gender test is conducted, there is an uproar in the media and Rashmi is banned by the association. Ishit Desai (Abhishek Banerjee) comes in the role of a lawyer and fights Rashmi’s case and then the film becomes a courtroom drama. Rashmi becomes pregnant in the middle of the case. Watch the film to see whether Rashmi is able to win the case by breaking the trap of gender test.
Taapsee Pannu has worked very hard for this role. He has physically transformed. Body built like a sprinter. Taapsee has not taken any inspiration from anywhere mentally in the film, nor has she tried to understand this character. It was not that only Taapsee can play this character, but it does not seem that Taapsee has given anything special to this character from her side. Tamil films director Nanda Periyasamy has written the story of this film. In some female athletes, the amount of male hormone ‘testosterone’ is more than the desired amount. Based on this, such athletes are banned. Such an incident has happened with Dutee Chand of our country. There have been many sportspersons around the world who were stripped of their Olympic medals because male hormones were found in their bodies. Rashmi’s story is also of one such athlete. Taapsee had achieved this ‘hyper androgenism’ look with body and make-up, but her hot temper was similar to all her earlier films.
Her husband and part time coach Priyanshu has done a great job in the film. He seems to be an army man, a lover as well, and a sharp man as well. Viewers have seen Priyanshu in the role of Robin aka Radheshyam in Mirzapur. There is a lot of potential in Priyanshu among the new actors. On the other hand, in the role of a lawyer, Abhishek Banerjee has once again proved that he is not only a good casting director but also a great actor. In the court, he starts fighting the case in film style. Here the director again turns to the formula and the cross-examination between the side’s lawyer and the government’s lawyer turns into a little comedy. As the coach of the association, Mantra has performed very well. There should be no pressure of politics in the game, but Mantra knows that this pressure will come, that’s why he speaks very cautiously in the whole episode. The best role has gone to the hands of Supriya Pathak. Rashmi Veera’s (Taapsee Pannu) mother Bhanuben’s character has been crafted so well that the viewers see different dimensions of Supriya Pathak’s character. In one scene, she takes strict action against the village boy who raised his hand on his wife and the women of the entire village vow to not work with her either in household or business. In this scene, Supriya Pathak gives proof of being an actor of her stature.
Anirudh Guha, grandson of famous filmmaker Dulal Guha, who is also a film critic and now a writer of films and web series, is the screenwriter of the film. After deeply studying the story of male hormones in women, he has written the script of this film with Kanika Dhillon. Being a knowledgeable writer and good film critic, his script was very tight. Music is by Amit Trivedi. Due to its release on OTT, the promotion of songs is now almost negligible. There are 4 songs in total and all four are good. Humming wise, ‘Ghani Kool Chori’ (Bhumi Trivedi) is a good dance garba. A motivational song ‘Zidd’ sounds a bit hoarse but this song fills a different enthusiasm during training in the film. Neha Parti Matiani, who has done a course in cinematography from FTII, has reduced the effect of dramatization of the film by not using any special shot or wonderful angle in Rashmi Rocket. Cinematography like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in sports drama films was not seen in this film.
There are flaws in the script of Rashmi Rocket. Rashmi Rocket is a sports drama and then a courtroom drama in the first part. Taapsee Pannu has done a good but very fixed kind of acting in Rashmi Rocket. The screenplay of Rashmi Rocket is long. The film should have been shortened a bit. Despite all this the film is good. Can sit and watch with the whole family. There are neither abuses nor nudity. Watch it like a motivational film so that when it comes time to fight against the system, you have some idea in advance. When Rashmi Rocket ends, it seems that something else should have happened but it does not happen. This incomplete film could have been a little better. Kudos to director Akarsh Khurana for making a film on this sensitive and bizarre subject.
