Rashmi Shukla Maharashtra DGP: High profile IPS officer Rashmi Shukla will be the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. Sources gave this information on Friday (29 December). Shukla is all set to take over the reins of the state police from current Director General of Police (DGP) Rajneesh Seth. Rajneesh Seth will soon take over as the Chairman of Maharashtra Public Service Commission.

Rashmi Shukla is currently on central deputation to the post of DG. Shukla has held several key positions in the state in the past, including Pune Police Commissioner and Director of the State Intelligence Wing. She was in the news after the phone tapping case.

Rashmi Shukla is the most senior IPS officer of the state. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that the state government has submitted a list to the Union Home Ministry according to the level of seniority.

According to TOI report, a high-ranking bureaucrat said that in terms of seniority, Shukla is followed by Maharashtra Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Managing Director Sandeep Bishnoi and Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar. Rashmi Shukla is from the 1988 batch, while Bishnoi and Phansalkar are from the 1989 batch. Rashmi Shukla will retire on 30 June 2024, Bishnoi on 31 March 2024 and Phansalkar on 31 March 2025.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 4 October Eknath Shinde had appointed Rajneesh Seth as the Chairman of MPSC. However, he was then asked not to take up the new charge and wait till someone is appointed as DGP in his place. Seth, a 1988 batch IPS officer, is scheduled to retire on December 31.

The bureaucrat said that as per the norms set by the Home Ministry, the state government will have to submit a panel of senior-most IPS officers with service record of the last 10 years. The Home Ministry makes a shortlist, from which the state government selects the new DGP.

There were allegations of tapping the phones of politicians, Bombay HC had canceled two FIRs.

On September 8 this year, the Bombay High Court had canceled two FIRs against IPS officer Rashmi Shukla. He was accused of allegedly tapping the phones of politicians between 2015-2019, when the previous BJP-led alliance was in power in the state.

In the first FIR lodged in Mumbai, Shukla was booked for illegally tapping the phones of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and NCP leader Eknath Khadse, while in the second FIR lodged in Pune, he was booked. Congress leader Nana Patole’s phone was illegally tapped.
