RD Burman Birth Anniversary: In the 60’s, a musician came into the industry who transformed music. He started his career as a music director.

RD Burman’s family background

Rahul Dev Burman was born on 27 June 1939 in a Bengali family in Kolkata. His father was Sachin Dev Burman i.e. SD Burman who was a legendary music director of Hindi cinema and Bengali films. His mother Meera Dev Burman was a lyricist of Bengali films.

Rahul Dev Burman was commonly known as RD Burman and his fans called him ‘Pancham Da’. RD Burman married Rita Patel in 1966 and divorced her in 1971. He married Asha Bhosle in 1980, with whom he remained till his last days. RD Burman had no children.

RD Burman got his musical sense from his father SD Burman and mother Meera Dev Burman. RD Burman’s first film as a music director was Teesri Manzil (1966) whose songs were hits. RD Burman started giving music in back to back films at the beginning of his career which includes films like ‘Sholay’, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, ‘Pyar Ka Mausam’, ‘Baharon Ke Sapne’, ‘Jewel Thief’ and ‘Prem Pujari’.

RD Burman started falling ill in his last days. He had also stopped making music. The film 1942: A Love Story, which was released in 1994, was his last film made with RD Burman’s music. The makers of the film had persuaded RD Burman a lot for this. It is said that RD Burman started living alone in his last days. RD Burman breathed his last on 4 January 1994.
