Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena approved relaxation in educational qualification for recruitment to jobs of 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims. This matter was pending for almost 40 years. This decision will help a large group to get jobs and secure employment. The LG has directed the concerned departments to explore the possibility of providing employment to children of deceased or aged applicants on humanitarian grounds. The initiative aims to ease the financial difficulties of affected families. In his permission, LG wrote that the 1984 anti-Sikh riots are a stain on the Indian democratic tradition. During this period, atrocities were committed on a particular minority community while keeping human rights at bay. The riots had affected many families and the lives of the sole breadwinners in the family had been taken away.

In his order, LG wrote that the remaining applicants identified by the Revenue Department should be given complete relaxation in the educational qualification required for the posts of MTS. The Department will take action in case of giving employment to any one of the children of the applicants in cases where the applicants have already crossed the prescribed age limit for employment despite the age relaxation given, or have died. The decision of the Lieutenant Governor comes after a comprehensive review of the cases, which revealed that applicants were denied employment, despite meeting the eligibility criteria. The government had earlier nominated 564 persons for compassionate appointments, of which 133 posts were secured in the 1990s. Although age relaxation was introduced in later years, relaxation in eligibility remained a hurdle for many.

Had met LG

A delegation of various groups, public representatives, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and victims had met the Lieutenant Governor and appealed to consider all the eligible applicants who are either aged or have passed away.

On the instructions of the LG, the Service Department reviewed the case and proposed to give only one-time relaxation in educational qualification to the victims. With the approval of LG, the minimum educational qualification for MTS post has been reduced from 10th class to 8th class, making a larger number of candidates eligible. This decision is an important step towards ensuring justice and providing necessary relief to the victims of the 1984 riots.
