The liquor ban in Bihar in 2016 has reduced the number of daily and weekly drinkers by 24 lakhs (7.8%). Not only this, cases of sexual violence have also reduced by 21 lakhs (3.6%). This has been revealed in a new study published in ‘The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia Journal’.

According to the report, due to the liquor ban, 18 lakh men in the state have been saved from becoming obese. Researchers from the International Food Policy Research Institute of America were also included in the team of researchers. The researchers analyzed the data of health and door-to-door surveys at the national and district levels. The authors of the study said that due to strict liquor regulation policies, there has been a lot of improvement in the field of crime and health in the state.

The number of people drinking alcohol was higher before the ban

According to researchers, before the ban, alcohol consumption among men in Bihar increased from 9.7 percent to 15 percent, while in neighboring states it increased from 7.2 percent to 10.3 percent. After the ban, this trend has changed. Alcohol consumption in Bihar fell by 7.8 percent, while in neighboring states it increased to 10.4 percent.

Similarly, a decrease has been observed in violence against women in Bihar. The rate of violence due to passion has declined by 4.6 percent and sexual violence has declined by 3.6 percent.
