When a person living in India goes to a country like America, he faces a lot of problems in driving there. The reason for this is the location of the steering of the vehicles. Actually, in America the steering position of vehicles is on the left side whereas in India it is on the right side. Let us now understand that when in many countries of the world the steering position of vehicles is on the left side, then why in India it is on the right side and how its history is linked to slavery.
History is linked to slavery
India remained a slave of the British for a long time. During this period, many things changed in the country which persist even today. One of these is traffic rules and the place of steering of vehicles. In fact, when carriages started running on the roads in Britain, the driver of the carriage used to sit on the horse on the left. This is so that the carriage coming from the front passes very close and when the carriages are crossing, an eye can be kept on both the carriages.
After this, when motor cars came to Britain, it was customary to have carriages in them. The steering position remained on the right side. Now at that time India was a slave of Britain, so here also the steering position remained on the right side. Many things changed in India after independence but the place of steering did not change. Repeated research was done and expert opinion was taken. There was a report on this in 1969 also. In this report it was claimed that traffic moving on the left side causes fewer accidents than traffic moving on the right side. The main reason behind this is that when the driver’s seat is on the right side, his eyes remain on the entire road while driving. In such a situation, the risk of an accident is reduced.
