Born on 8 August 1994 in Imphal, the capital of Manipur, it was not easy for Saikhom Mirabai Chanu to dream of weightlifting. Especially when you do not have proper facilities for training and you have to struggle every day for your dream. But Mirabai did not give up. With her hard work and dedication, she created a new path not only for herself but also for millions of youth. When Mirabai used to lift bundles of wood in her childhood days, she probably never imagined that one day she would bring glory to India. But her hard work and dedication took her to this point.

Had to travel more than 50 kilometers

Mirabai Chanu says that she saw Kunjarani Devi doing weightlifting in her childhood and got attracted to this sport. She told her parents about her desire to do weightlifting and after a lot of persuasion, her parents agreed. Weightlifting was not easy for Chanu, who lives in a small village near Imphal. There were no facilities for this in the village, due to which she had to travel more than 50 kilometers for practice.

Training started at a young age

Mirabai Chanu started training when she was only 13 years old. The year when she started training was 2007 but in 2011 she won gold medals in the International Youth Championship and South Asian Junior Games. Just two years later, she also won the title of best weightlifter in the Junior National Championship. At the same time, after winning the silver medal in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, Chanu’s confidence had reached the seventh sky.

A victory made me forget old pains

Chanu says that she rejected the idea of ​​quitting weightlifting due to financial constraints to prepare for the Rio Olympics and qualified for the Olympics. Although she was not successful there, the victory in the World Championship after that has made her forget those wounds.

Could not follow the diet chart

Recalling the early days, Mirabai Chanu says that in the beginning she lacked facilities. Milk and chicken were essential in the diet chart, but due to the financial condition of the family, it was not possible to follow the chart every day. The diet chart was not followed for a long time but she continued preparing and today Mira Bai Chanu is representing India in the Paris Olympics.
