Samsung vs Apple: Last year in 2022, Apple had overtaken Samsung to become the world’s top smartphone brand. Now in 2023, Samsung has taken a title back from its name. Samsung has once again become the world’s top smartphone brand, and the crown of the world’s top smartphone brand has come off Apple’s head. Samsung has taken the lead in terms of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2023 (Q1 2023). Samsung has achieved this growth at a time when the market has declined by 14% year-on-year (YoY) and 7% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ).
Only so many smartphones were shipped in the first quarter
According to a report by Counterpoint Research, there were 280.2 million smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2023. Senior analyst Harmeet Singh Walia said this has been the weakest holiday-season quarter since 2013. The market research firm has attributed the slower recovery than expected in China.
How far behind is Apple from Samsung?
Samsung’s shipments declined by 19%, but the company still held the top position by shipping 60.6 million units and capturing 22% market share. Samsung beat Apple’s shipment with 1%. Apple’s YoY shipment decline was the least among the top five brands. Apple held a Q1 share of 21%, just 1% less than Samsung. The demand for Apple iPhone 14 series has given a lot of profit to Apple.
At this time Apple and Samsung remain the highest profit earning brands. The two brands together capture 96% of global smartphone operating profits. Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus and Vivo have completed the list of top smartphones.
